Sustainability

Omegapure™ natural Tasmanian salmon oil is made from renewable resources.

The fish used in our process are grown from eggs harvested from specially selected adult salmon, reared for human consumption. We are therefore able to supply a very high quality salmon oil - without further depleting wild fish stocks.

The Atlantic salmon fish stock we breed is one of the most efficient sources of food grown for human consumption. It takes 8kg of feed to produce 1kg of beef and 3kg of feed to produce 1kg of pork but only 1.2kg of feed to produce 1kg of Atlantic salmon.
Atlantic salmon is therefore around 85% more efficient as a source of protein for human consumption than beef cattle.

Atlantic salmon produced by Aquaculture are also more efficient than wild caught salmon, as they consume up to 10kg of feed to produce 1kg of finished product.
Our oil is extracted from by-product from some of Tasmania’s largest salmon canneries. This by-product, known as heads and frames - is refrigerated after the salmon fillets are removed, then canned and cooked or smoked for human consumption. They are then sent to our unique low-temperature enzyme oil extraction plant in Triabunna, Tasmania.

As the fish used in our process are grown for human consumption, we are able to supply a high quality salmon oil without further depleting wild fish stocks.

Our suppliers have a dedicated sustainability department that works closely with the local research community to improve sustainability and review climate change impacts on ocean temperatures. We are therefore helping to mitigate expected climate change impacts in Tasmania.

Our suppliers also work to control their effect on the water quality and benthic levels of the sea, and to protect the local wildlife - such as fur seals.

Another important aspect of our sustainability is our low carbon footprint when compared to imported bleached fish oils. Imported oils typically travel from South America to Norway for processing and then back to Australia (approximately 38,000 km or nearly once around the world!). Omegapure™ travels from Tasmania to Sydney (approximately 1600km), or just 4% of the distance that imported oils travel.
